Iphone 4 screen not blackening during calls?

Is there a setting to make the screen on the Iphone 4 go black so not buttons are pushed when put up to your ear during a call. It used to do this then the screen was replaced and is no longer doing it... Any suggestions or is there a setting we need to check? Would really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you.
